What happens to old friends?

I have a bit of melancholy after hearing the renewed tensions between Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. One of the most talented duos in music, to be sure. Although I am not aware of the nuances of their friendship, the superficial connections brought an enduring sound that I hope lasts for generations to come. 

Friendships often come and go. I have noticed in my own life very few true, lasting friendships. Many acquaintances, few true friends. Opening myself to friendships is difficult. Those I keep, I try to hold on to. In my mind, I am still close to some who have not been in my life for years. Some old friends I am sure are not interested in renewing the friendship, but I still consider them a friend. For an upcoming writing, I plan to discuss more about lost friends and maybe a little about lost loves.

When the friendship find no harmony

Do they fail to make a name?

When silence sounds hinder me

Do the friendships still remain?

 

The park bench now unbalanced

With one friend sitting still.

Looking past your talents

The boxer climbs the hill.

 

Homeward bounding melodies

Betraying indifferent notes.

Building walls of infidelities

To the poet’s one-man quotes.

 

The only living reason

For leaving songs to die;

The hazy-looking season

When friends they said goodbye.
